Wednesday Update 10/30/19

Quick Wednesday update:

Last week I pruned back the Chinese elm I got from Bonsai Northwest. Didn't feel like messing with root cuttings at that time, so I threw them all in a bucket of water. This weekend I potted up all the cuttings. I ended up with about 6-8 small root cuttings and about 3 larger root cuttings. So before doing the root cuttings, I did a bit of research. Turns out throwing them all in a bucket of water for a few days is actually a good thing. The larger cuttings glazed over the cut with this weird gel. I read this is more or less rooting hormone or some sort of hormone that promotes leaf growth from the cuttings. I've also been reading that it takes a while for the root cuttings to change their cellular make up and switch over from just roots to trunk, branches and leaves. Potting up the cuttings is easy as shit. The process itself, what the tree goes through, is complicated.

Also this Week, I ordered some 2 year old ficus cuttings from a grower in Texas. Smallish cuttings. I received F. microcarpa 'goldcoin', F. microcarpa 'tiger bark', F. nerifolia, and F. virens. I have them growing indoor with the scheffleras.

I received my Japanese maple seeds as well as the crab apple seeds in the mail. Honestly, the seeds look like garbage, they came from China. I'm not holding much hope, as they're likely shit seeds. Hedged my bet though. I ordered 5 sargent crabapples.

All for now.
