Last update I mentioned that I planted some crab-apple cuttings. I thought I'd include a couple pictures.
First and last pictures are of my crab-apple seedlings, about 3 years old. This is after winter's pruning. I will continue to growth them out to fatten up the trunk, followed by drastic pruning in winter. I will also continue to take hardwood cuttings for late winter cuttings.
The middle picture is an example of one my crab-apple hardwood cuttings. It's still a bit cool, so not a lot of growth. Having said that, I've noticed I can obtain fat trunks quicker using cuttings. Plus, it's practically free. The cuttings are from winter pruning, so it makes sense to utilize them for some cheap, grow your own bonsai.
On the subject of grow you own bonsai, I still have a surviving ficus bonsai. I've taken some cuttings and I've been starting them in water. Takes a little longer than Phoenix, but with some patience it should work.
I also purchased a small schefflera from the grocery store late last year. I did some drastic pruning and am also trying to grow the cuttings in water. Again, takes a bit longer than Phoenix, but I've been pretty successful. I'm going to see how I do with some tropical bonsai here on the peninsula
