I mentioned I ordered some trident maple seeds and started to stratify them last month. I've been checking my seeds weekly and today I noticed some of the trident maples have begun to sprout.
Lucky for me, I bought some seed starting trays and garden soil from Home Depot a couple of weeks ago. The trays were the ones with the 72 cell seed trays. I started 72 of the 100 trident maple seeds. I just filled the little cells with dirt, packed it down a bit. The seeds were planted maybe a quarter inch deep and covered with soil. Then I just put the whole thing outside.
About the weather - seems like it's been a very mild winter. It dropped to below freezing a few times, but really it's just been cool and wet. Actually a very nice winter so far. Yes, winter isn't over yet. But these are maples, I think they'll be fine even if we have a cold spell. Plus if we do have a freeze after they sprout, I could always bring in the tray.
Some of my crabs have begun to wake up. I took the opportunity to re-pot some in larger pots so they can grow better. I still want to plant some in the ground, but I'm still debating. For now time is on my side and I don't have to rush into something.
The Japanese maple deshojo seeds still haven't sprouted, which surprised me. They're nice and plump and I thought they'd be bursting by now. Maybe they're duds? Maybe they're just taking their time. Time will tell, I suppose.
All for now.
