Here's the area I'm looking to cover:
about 20 feet long and about 4 feet wide.
I can also opt to cover about half my area. Some of the stuff I'm growing won't suffer from the summer heat. That would be about 10 feet by 4 feet.
I thought about making a hoop house for my growing area. The idea is to use PVC pipes bent into a U shape to provide a place to anchor the shade cloth. The PVC Piping is held in place with the rebar, hammered into the ground until about 8 inches sticks out. This give you a fairly solid frame from which you can then hang your shade cloth from.
To create the hoop house, I would need to purchase:
homedepot.com pricing:
For 20 feet:
6x20ft Easy Gardener Fabric Shade $29.64 x1 $29.64
1/2inchx10ft PVC Pipe $2.20 x5 $11.00
1.2inchx2ft #4 Rebar $2.75 x10 $27.50
Total $68.14
For 10 feet:
6x20ft Easy Gardener Fabric Shade $29.64 x1 $29.64
1/2inchx10ft PVC Pipe $2.20 x3 $6.60
1.2inchx2ft #4 Rebar $2.75 x4 $11.00
Total $47.24
But yikes! The price is getting up there. I can buy a cheap EZ up type canopy for almost this price. As a matter of fact, looking at Amazon, I can buy a 10x10 ez up type canopy tent for right about $75. Truthfully, I won't really need shade until after mid July when the weather starts to get really hot. I'd only really be needing it for about a month. If weather starts to get really windy, I can always strike down the canopy. Added bonus: I can always use the canopy for setting up shop at a swap meet, camping, or any number of things.
Speaking of setting up the canopy for setting up shop... for $139, I can get a really nice vendor quality canopy. Amazon I love/hate you. But I digress, this higher quality canopy will wait until later, as I don't think my boss will let me spend that sort of money on a canopy. At least not right now.
So, yeah, I think I'm likely going to buy an EZ Up type canopy.
