So I noticed my last blog entry was from Dec 2009...
What can I say, not much more to add, pretty muh same ole, same ole.
If you're wondering what ever happened to some of the seedlings and cuttings I started (all the way back to 08), most I either sold them off, or they died. I use a semi automated watering system and because of the heat and uvb rays, they're prone to breakage. No big deal in most parts of the country if your stuff goes without water for a couple days, but here in Phoenix, a couple days without water in the summer means death.
Not everything died. A lot of my Adenium obessum thrived during the summer, even without the water. My pachira aquatica seedlings did pretty good in the summer, and I didn't lose all of my ficus cuttings. However, this past winter was especially brutal (cold). I lost most Adenium to hard freeze. I still have about 30 ficus cuttings that I've begun to wire and they're looking good.
I also have a few odd ducks in the mix that are growing. I have a fokea edulis that I purchase in 07 (I think). The caudex was originally about as fat as my thumb, it's now about 3 inches wide. I have a couple other small desert plants with fat caudex, but I don't know what they are. One is a vine; the caudex has grown all that much but it did something interesting last year. During one of those times where my watering system broke, no doubt. The vine sent out a runner which planted itself in one of my pots with a now dead plant. The caudex on this one grew *very* fat, and eventually cut itself off from the parent. Something else about this vine: when I bought it, it had a small weed growing in it. I pointed out the weed to the propieter (at the Tucson Reptile Show), who got a bit excited about it. He said it was a rare desert caudex, but he didn't remember what. He suggested I don't pull it, but to see what it turns into. I did that, let it grow for a while, then transfered it to its own pot. It's still quite small, but has a nice fat little caudex. And it flowered! Small, white, trumpet shaped flowers.
Now on to my pottery-
As a lark, I decided to do some kooky fish but with smaller mouths and my signature tentacles and horns. I did some more goblin head pots, as well as goblin heads and dragon heads. Did some sea urchin pots, as well as some other 'sea life' series. No point in describing them, I'll see if I can post some pictures.
